Trauma therapy is counseling for the things that happened to you and did not stop mattering when they ended. That can be one event or years of them. A car accident, an assault, combat, a childhood spent bracing for the next thing, a loss you never got room to process.
You do not need a diagnosis to start, and you do not have to tell the whole story in the first session. Most people come in because something in daily life stopped working: sleep, anger, relationships, drinking, or the sense of watching yourself from a distance.
What to expect
A first session that is mostly you deciding whether you can work with this person. Nothing else is required of you.
Sessions of about 45 to 50 minutes, usually weekly to start, adjusted as things settle.
Counselors trained in trauma-informed care, not general counselors improvising.
You set the pace. Nobody makes you revisit anything before you are ready.
Coordination with our medical and case management teams if medication, housing or benefits are part of the picture.
Not until you want to. Early sessions are about getting to know you and figuring out what you want to be different. You set the pace, and you can stop or slow down at any point.
